Tips to Make Breastfeeding Easier

Many women experience some discomforts in the first days and weeks of breastfeeding. It is temporary and it is well worth hanging in there. Here are some tips to make it easier:

• Be prepared with lanolin to help heal sore, cracked nipples, a major reason women discontinue breastfeeding. Don't wait until you are hurting to go get some -- have it available before baby arrives.
• Ice packs can provide much needed relief in those first few days when your "milk comes in" and you are engorged. For quick relief, keep a couple of moistened nursing pads in your freezer or fridge to quickly put in your bra when you aren't able to sit with a bulky icepack
• Encourage "let down" with a warm moist towel across your breasts. It's very soothing.

Call your doctor if you have pain, especially when baby isn't nursing. This could be mastitis and will need treatment.

Hang in there. Discomforts are temporary and the health benefits for you and baby are well worth it.
